Our Lady, Star of the Sea
Our Lady, Star of the Sea is a one-woman show about love, grief, and the inherent horror of being a teenage girl. Fresh out of a funeral, Miriam grapples with the possibility of a true heavenly saviour and, even worse- the idea of that heavenly saviour coming from her. Miriam finds herself in a legitimate pregnant pause and handles it the same way she handles her loss- clumsily, scathingly, and not saintlike in the slightest. Performed by Grace Fourace at Cecilia Cove Park, Our Lady is a portrait of a struggling girl- staged right by the sea- and expressed through a combination of raw movement, blunt confessions, and awkward humour. As Miriam finds herself, we, as the audience, find our answers to the unflinching questions this show poses. When does faith become a poison? How do we free ourselves from guilt? Does Planned Parenthood really check ID? Our Lady is a piece of work dedicated to those who were teenage girls, those who were Catholic, and those who agree that shower heads look just a little biblical.
