The Last 5.5 Years
(not to be confused with the musical)

Kayla had high hopes for 2020 (as did we all). But truly, 2019 had been, up until that point, one of her worst years on record. Her cat died, she had an out-of-town Fringe flop, experienced some minor heartbreak, and almost got evicted because of OCD-related hoarding. With the freshness of the Fringe flop, she almost didn’t enter the lottery for the 2020 Victoria Fringe, figuring she needed a bit more time to lick her wounds. Ultimately leaving it up to the universe (because honestly, she was probably going to be waitlisted anyway, as per usual), the universe decided she was being a baby and told her to suck it up.
But in the worst ever example of mixed signals she had ever experienced, a few months later, the universe turned around and said, “Ha. Just kidding.”
The five years that followed took her on a journey through new mental health lows, a broken wrist, and a renoviction. But it also brought her opportunities for new beginnings and provided the necessary space to start to heal – mentally and physically. Now, after a five year delay, the universe has given her the chance she missed out on in 2020 – with a much more compelling story to tell this time around.
No latecomers after the show begins.

About the Artist
Kayla Hart is a 2011 UVic Writing graduate who participated in her first Victoria Fringe in 2012 and has been unsuccessfully applying nearly every year since. She was however lucky enough to be drawn for Fringe lotteries in Vancouver (2014) and Winnipeg (2019) and was selected to workshop a show in the 2016 Intrepid Theatre YOU Show series. After years of being waitlisted, Kayla was finally drawn for the Victoria Fringe again. Unfortunately, it was for the 2020 festival. Five years and quite the tumultuous mental health journey later, she is back with quite the story to tell.
