Sword Dance
The Sword Dance is intended for an audience of middle-schoolers (and beyond!), and follows Marigold, a competitive Highland dancer who struggles socially in school and longs for a confidant - who she finds in her new imaginary friend, appearing to her as a Highland Dancing spirit, sharing folklore about the history of the dance, as well as some (questionable, but well-intentioned) life advice. This peppy, quick-paced piece infuses humour, Scottish culture, and sentimentality with the aching awkwardness that is being a middle-schooler who doesn’t quite “fit” - and who is starting to question her feelings for the beautiful red-headed penpal she met a year prior. As if that wasn't enough, Marigold is learning to navigate new hurdles as the first symptoms of fibromyalgia begin to emerge, and she is met head-on with the challenges of a medical - and social - system ill-equipped to recognize or treat invisible disability.
